The economics of COVID-19 lockdowns

Until a vaccine for Covid-19 is found we will continue to see governments around the globe wrestle with a range of ways in which to supress and control the spread of the virus whilst trying to manage the significant economic effects caused by lockdowns and travel restrictions
With Australia and a number of other countries succumbing to a second wave of lockdowns, the Swedish government opted for the herd immunity approach, making it one of the few advanced economies in the world to do so. For the Swedes there was no enforced lockdown, and social distancing was recommended but not dictated.
Within this article we look at the different lockdown response’s governments have taken to this year’s pandemic and compare the economic outcomes on both sides.
